Super healthy, cabbage goes a long way back. In ancient times, the Greeks treated it as a special food for its many medicinal properties. There are tales about raw cabbage juice being a standard treatment for a nasty hangover! Salads, dals, sabzis, pickles and even raitas, cabbage does full justice to each preparation. Shop for the ones that have a crisp, shiny look to it.

Ingredients for Sweet and Sour Cabbage Recipe

  • Red cabbage shredded 1 small

  • brown sugar/jaggery 1 tablespoon

  • Vinegar ¼ cup

  • Butter 2 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon + for garnishing

  • Onion sliced 1 medium

  • Apple 1 medium

  • Red wine ½ cup

  • Salt to taste

  • Black pepper powder a pinch


Step 1

Heat 2 tablespoons butter in a non-stick pan. Add onion and sauté till it turns soft.

Step 2

Grate apple and put in a bowl.

Step 3

Add cabbage to the pan, mix and cook for 1-2 minutes.

Step 4

Add grated apple and mix well. Add brown sugar and mix well. Add wine and mix well.

Step 5

Add salt, pepper powder and mix well. Add ¼ cup water, ¼ cup vinegar, mix well and braise for 20-30 minutes.

Step 6

Switch off heat and add 1 teaspoon butter and splash of vinegar. Mix well.

Step 7

Garnish with a dollop of butter and serve as an accompaniment.
