Karnataka cuisine comprises of many vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes that are full of flavour and taste. It is one of the oldest surviving cuisines and its origins can be traced back to the Iron Age. 
The varieties in Karnataka cuisine have influenced the neighbouring states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Maharashtra. The cuisine also reflects influences from these four neighbouring states on its food habits. 
Being a coastal state, coconut is grown in abundance. Needless to say coconut in its various forms like oil, milk, fresh and dried coconut is put to excellent use in its cuisine.

Ingredients for Prawns Puli Munchi Recipe

  • Raw fresh shrimp peeled and deveined 1 Pound

  • Tamarind lemon size ball 1

  • Dry red chilies (Byadge or Kundapur chilies) 10-12

  • Coriander seeds 1/2 teaspoon

  • Cumin seeds 1/2 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder a pinch

  • Vegetable oil 1 tablespoon

  • Mustard seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Garlic cloves 8

  • Curry leaves 8-10

  • Salt to taste


Step 1

Soak the tamarind in water for about an hour and extract the pulp.

Step 2

Dry roast the chilies, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, 4 cloves of garlic with turmeric with 1 table spoon of oil.

Step 3

Use little water and grind the above to a fine thick paste with tamarind.

Step 4

Heat oil in a pan. Add the mustard seeds, curry leaves, crushed garlic, when they splutter, add the paste, water as needed, salt and bring it to a boil.

Step 5

Add the shrimps and simmer for 5 to 8 minutes.

Step 6

Serve hot over rice.
