How many times have we thought rice is a blessing? We use it for holy purposes but we also can pressure up a quick pulao or khichdi when hunger pangs are drumming away! This is one grain that is about 98% percent digestible. In India we are familiar with Basmati, Patna or brown rice but it is also available as Italian Rice and Glutinous Rice which is popular in Chinese and Japanese cuisines.

Ingredients for Black Pepper Rice Recipe

  • Rice cooked 2 cups

  • Black peppercorns 10-12

  • Cumin seeds 2 teaspoons

  • Dried red chilli broken 1

  • Ghee 2 tablespoons

  • Split Bengal gram (chana dal) 1 teaspoon

  • Split skinless black gram (dhuli urad dal) 1 teaspoon

  • Mustard seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Onion 1 medium

  • Curry leaves 10-12

  • Tomato 1 medium

  • Salt to taste


Step 1

Dry roast cumin seeds and black peppercorns in a non-stick pan till fragrant. Add dried chilli and mix well. Switch off heat, cool down to room temperature and grind to a coarse powder.

Step 2

Heat ghee in another non-stick pan, add Bengal gram, black gram and mustard seeds and saute till lightly browned.

Step 3

Roughly chop onion.

Step 4

Add curry leaves and onion to the pan and saute till translucent.

Step 5

Roughly chop tomato and add to the pan and saute till tomato becomes soft. Add salt and mix well. Add rice and mix well.

Step 6

Add ground powder and mix well. Cook till the rice gets heated through.

Step 7

Transfer into a serving plate and serve hot.
